Message From The President

Dear Colleague,

In late December, the University of Michigan reported their Monitoring the Future findings for 2006, announcing that the historic decline in rates of daily smoking amongst our nation's younger teens has ended. This is alarming news for all of us in public health who have collectively worked so hard to prevent youth smoking, as it serves as a potential predictor for a possible upswing in years to come.

It is timely then that the American Legacy Foundation® announces that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided matching funds to help our foundation reach youth in underserved, rural areas of the nation with our successful truth® youth-smoking prevention campaign in 45 small towns and rural areas.

Foundation Achieves Gold Standard™ Accreditation For Commitment To Employee Health
The American Legacy Foundation® has joined the group of companies and organizations that are waging a coordinated effort to overcome cancer's toll on our nation. The foundation has received its accreditation through the CEO Roundtable on Cancer's CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ showcasing its corporate commitment to the health of employees and their families.

Receiving this accreditation required the foundation to meet rigorous Gold Standard™ requirements, which began with an evaluation of its benefits and culture, so that it could take extensive, concrete actions to promote cancer prevention in five key areas that promote cancer prevention, early detection and access to quality care.

Comic Actor Jason Alexander — Behind the Camera for a Serious Cause
Emmy-nominated actor Jason Alexander recently made his commercial directorial debut by directing two of the foundation's public service advertising spots. Alexander directed the public service announcements (PSAs) "Dinner" and "Movie" for Don't Pass Gas, an American Legacy Foundation PSA campaign focused on the issue of secondhand smoke. The PSAs, consisting of two television and two radio ads, are designed to amuse viewers while calling attention to the seriousness of secondhand smoke. The Don't Pass Gas campaign is part of a partnership with the Advertising Council.

ING New York City Marathon — Running for a Life-Saving Cause
On November 5, 2006 more than 30,000 world-class professional athletes participated in one of the world's premier road races, the ING New York City Marathon. As part of the Marathon's Charity Program, the American Legacy Foundation was invited to participate for the first time ever as a New York Road Runners' Charity Partner. The program provides runners guaranteed entry as part of a fundraising initiative. More than 40 runners joined Team Legacy and helped to raise more than $100,000 in support of Legacy's life-saving work.

truth® Extends Interactive Reach, Engages Young People On Social Networking Web Sites
The American Legacy Foundation®'s national youth smoking prevention campaign is bringing its recently launched Infect truth® campaign directly to teens by placing new truth® "profile pages" on popular social networking sites. The Infect truth® campaign, first launched on Oct. 23, targeted traditional media such as television and magazines. This next phase of the campaign connects with teens on another level, reaching them through online sites where they frequently gather and share information.

American Legacy Foundation Announces New Small Innovative Grants
As part of its Small Innovative Grants (SIG) program, the American Legacy Foundation recently announced awards of more than $1.1 million to 15 organizations to support their progressive work in tobacco control. Since September 2000, the foundation's SIG program has awarded more than $9 million to 88 organizations working in tobacco control.

The funds will assist these programs for one year.
