Capitol Hill Briefing
On May 10, 2006 the American Legacy Foundation®, and Women's Policy, Inc. in cooperation with the Women's Congressional Caucus held a briefing luncheon at the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill. The briefing, titled Her Story: Smoking's Presence throughout a Woman's Life, discussed the effects and influence of smoking on women of all ages and life-stages including: infancy and childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and senior years.
The event, moderated by former Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, included panelists: Cathy Melvin, PhD, MPH, Chair of the National Partnership to Help Pregnant Smokers Quit; Cheryl G. Healton, Dr.PH, President and CEO, American Legacy Foundation; Tonya Guess, featured smoker in Legacy's "May Quits" ad campaign; Corinne Husten, MD, MPH, Acting Director, CDC Office on Smoking and Health; and John Clymer, President, Partnership for Prevention.
Topics of conversation included the impact of growing up in a smoking household, the media's influence on young girls and teenagers, and emerging trends and patterns of tobacco use among women.
