State of Hawaii Goes Smoke Free

Under the leadership of Governor Linda Lingle, a member of the American Legacy Foundation Board of Directors, the State of Hawaii announced it will become the nation's 14th smoke-free state. The announcement comes two weeks after the release of the Surgeon General's groundbreaking report on the dangers of secondhand smoke. The clean indoor air ordinance also restricts smoking in all workplaces, restaurants and bars. To further protect the health of its citizens, Hawaii will increase cigarette taxes by 20 cents per year, for six years. States with clean indoor air laws, such as New York, California and Massachusetts report positive effects from the passage of such laws in their states; New York bartenders' reports of wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing decreased by 69 percent and there has been no substantial impact on aggregate restaurant sales.
