truth® Crew Member Lives the Message Since early June, Emily Griggs, a truth® crew member, has toured the country with the AND1 MixTape Tour with an important message: tobacco is a deadly addiction. Griggs, 24 and originally from Iowa, says her passion for unveiling facts about tobacco use and the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry is driven by the recent tragic loss of her grandfather to lung cancer. "I am hoping that by talking to these kids they will never have to deal with dying from lung cancer or having a loved one die from lung cancer." The AND1 Mix Tape Tour is one of the hottest teen-oriented basketball tours that brings street basketball, DJs and hip hop music to teens around the country. At a typical truth® street jam, the truth® crew engages teens in discussions about tobacco use and its health consequences. "We try really hard not to be too preachy" Griggs said. The question "Did you know that tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds?" is a typical conversation starter. For Griggs, living on a co-ed bus in close quarters for a whole summer is worth the opportunity to spread the truth about tobacco and to help save young lives from tobacco addiction and disease.
