Adrian Abner, Legacy Youth Board Liaison, Tapped As Panelist for National Urban League |
 |
Adrian Abner, Legacy's Youth Board Liaison, was recently invited to participate as a panelist by the National Urban League's youth group, NULITES, (National Urban League Incentives to Excel and Succeed), a group focused on youth leadership, empowerment and career development. The panel discussion, entitled "The Power of You
Your Life, Your Health, Your Choice," was held during the National Urban League's 2006 annual conference in Atlanta, GA. The panel addressed the tobacco industry's marketing tactics and the effect of media images on youth.
Panel discussion issues included the role parents play in controlling youth exposure to negative media images; educating communities about negative media images; the issue of whether or not accepting tobacco industry money actually helps disadvantaged communities; and a call to action for minority communities to curb tobacco and drug usage.
Abner, 21, a senior at Florida A&M University, is a long-time anti-tobacco activist. He has been involved in Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) in his local community since its inception, and also works to educate students about the tactics used by the tobacco industry to lure young people into a life of nicotine addiction. |
