The American Legacy Foundation® promotes a number of grant opportunities in African American communities. In 2007, the foundation awarded grants to several organizations for their innovative approaches and commitment to the Black community. Described below are a sampling of recently funded Priority Populations (ethnic/racial minority groups and other underserved populations) grants aimed at addressing disparities in a culturally competent manner in the Black community:
- Humility of Mary Health Partners provides smoking cessation services to parents/caregivers of pediatric asthma patients. A Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist provides culturally competent and bilingual treatment, and counseling at the asthma clinic and various sites serving the Hispanic and African- American communities. This grant is located in Youngstown, OH.
- "Stay Quit, Get Fit," is a joint program of the National Nursing Centers Consortium and Eleventh Street Family Health Services. The program integrates cessation counseling and weekly exercise activities for low-income African- Americans into the services of a nurse-managed health center in north Philadelphia.
- "Project Fresh works to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke among children (0-6) enrolled in federal Head Start Programs, by converging three specific activities: (1) educating low-income families to understand the dangers of SHS; (2) assist families to develop household rules to reduce children's exposure to secondhand smoke and (3) developing free, accessible and effective tobacco quit programs for families of Head Start children. Project Fresh will be focused in Pottsville, PA.
- The Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine works to reduce disparities in access to cessation services. This project provides free on-site smoking cessation services developed specifically for smokers enrolled in urban addiction treatment programs. A treatment manual will be developed and disseminated to New Jersey state-funded quit centers.
The American Legacy Foundation is proud to support such a dedicated group of community organizations in an effort to reduce health disparities in the African-American community. The Priority Populations Initiative advances Legacy's commitment to create a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.
