American Legacy Foundation

American Legacy Foundation Sponsorship Highlights in 2007

In 2007, through its sponsorship department, the Foundation was able to provide financial support for a number of events including conferences, trainings, and health fairs and awards dinners. Funding went to a variety of events and organizations that focus on tobacco control, philanthropy, public health and underserved populations. Below is a sampling of events that the American Legacy Foundation sponsored this past year:

The Life and Breath Awards Dinner

Each year, the American Lung Association of the City of New York presents the Life & Breath Awards to individuals who have helped improve lives by furthering the mission of the organization - to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. The 2007 honorees included: Stephen S. Mills, president & CEO of New York Hospital Queens; Bernadette Murphy, Managing Director of Kimelman & Baird; Al Roker, Weather and Feature Reporter for the Today Show; and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.

All proceeds from the Gala and the Dinner support the work of the Association's research, education and advocacy programs.

"Best of the West" Annual Conference

The Coalition for Tobacco Free Arizona (CFTA) Annual Conference served as a forum for members of the tobacco control community in Arizona and neighboring states to come together to gain new information and network in sharing lessons learned, successes and challenges. The conference focused on best practices, promising programs and recent research in the areas of prevention, cessation and secondhand smoke.

The workgroup meeting convened to coordinate the Indian Country response to the CDC invitation for the American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian contribution to the "CDC Best Practice Guideline for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs" update.

The National Tribal Tobacco Prevention Network is an expanding alliance of tobacco prevention and education advocates committed to improving the wellness of American Indian and Alaska Native people by working to reduce commercial tobacco use.

Other organizations benefiting from Legacy sponsorship included the Mayo Nicotine Dependence Conference, the Association for Medical Education & Substance Abuse Research, and the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force.
