Youth Tobacco Prevention Grants Available
The American Legacy Foundation® officially announced a new grants initiative entitled "truth® or Consequences Youth Tobacco Prevention Grants Program." The grants initiative will support youth-driven, community-based tobacco use prevention efforts in 18 states around the country. Guidelines for Letters of Intent are posted at www.americanlegacy.org.

And the Scholarship goes to…
Recipients of the Alma Adams Scholarship Award Announced

The two 2007 Alma S. Adams Scholarship Award winners have been announced! The two recipients are Anthony Calegari-Heimuli of San Mateo, CA and Andrew Lyle Riesenburg from Cambridge, MA. All applicants were required to submit artwork that showcased their abilities to creatively raise community awareness of the consequences of using tobacco.

NAAG, Hermes Creative Awards 2007 Honor American Legacy Foundation®
Awards continue for the work of the American Legacy Foundation® this year. The organization's public health efforts have been recognized by the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) and the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals (AMCP), as well as the Hermes Creative Awards 2007.

truth® hits Primetime (Primetime Emmy that is!)
truth® has been nominated for an Emmy Award! A television ad from the American Legacy Foundation's youth smoking prevention campaign was named a finalist in the "Outstanding Commercial" category for its "Singing Cowboy" spot along with such well-known companies as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, American Express and Cingular.

Dear Colleague,

In the July issue of Nicotine and Tobacco Research, a new peer-reviewed study has been released that focuses on misperceptions by women on the leading causes of cancer deaths. The Vice Chair of Legacy's Board of Directors, Dr. Ellen Gritz, of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, and I were lead authors on this research, which found the majority of women (66.7%) inaccurately believed that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women, whereas only 29.7% correctly indicated lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among women. Black women were significantly more likely to indicate breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among women as compared to White women.

Youth, truth®, Hoops and Music
truth® kicked off its 8th annual nationwide summer tour last month. The truth® tour brings truth® crew members to summer music and basketball tours to spread life-saving information about the dangers of tobacco use and the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry.

American Legacy Foundation® Announces Newly Awarded Grants for the Second Phase of its Priority Populations Initiative
14 Programs Awarded for Novel Approaches to Tobacco Prevention, Cessation and Education

As part of the American Legacy Foundation®'s Priority Populations Initiative (PPI) program, the foundation recently announced awards of more than $1.3 million to 14 organizations across the country. The grants recognize and support the innovative work in tobacco control of organizations serving minorities and communities of limited means.

Foundation Youth Activists Discuss Tobacco Prevention Initiatives on Capitol Hill
The American Legacy Foundation®'s truth® crew members and Youth Activism Council members went to Capitol Hill last month, to discuss the importance of youth-oriented tobacco prevention efforts and the impact their experiences have had on them, with congressional offices representing their home states. The visits came just before the launch of the 8th annual summer truth® tour.
