Youth Tobacco Prevention Grants Available

The American Legacy Foundation® has announced a new grants initiative: the truth® or Consequences Youth Tobacco Prevention Grants Program, which will support community-based tobacco-use-prevention efforts in 18 states across the country. The grants will support youth-driven projects focused on creating change and reducing youth tobacco use in their local community. Projects must be relevant to 12-17 year old youth and promote young people as agents of social change.

The grants program is funded in part by a matching grant the American Legacy Foundation® received in 2006 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When appropriated, CDC funds for grant years 2007 and 2008 will be matched 2.1 to 1 by the American Legacy Foundation®. The federal share of the money accounts for 33 percent, or $2.4 million, of the total funds being used for the truth® or Consequences Youth Prevention Grants Program. The remaining 67 percent will be the matching, non-federal share provided by the foundation, for approximately $4.9 million.

Guidelines for Letters of Intent for the grants initiative are posted on Legacy's Web site, www.americanlegacy.org. The deadline for Letters of Intent is Friday, September 7, 2007. Only projects implemented in the following states are eligible for funding: Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming. Qualified organizations from any of the states and territories identified in the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) are eligible for funding, but projects must be implemented in the 18 states listed above. In addition, preference will be given to organizations located in the 18.
