Online Tobacco Library Gets a Virtual Overhaul

In May, the University of California, San Francisco Library and Center for Knowledge Management unveiled a redesigned Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (LTDL) Web site. The revamped site implements the latest technology, to allow full text searching capabilities across all 7.6 million previously secret tobacco industry documents in the collection. In addition, the LTDL contains two other unique collections: DATTA—depositions, testimony and opening and closing statements from tobacco-related trials; and Multimedia—links to more than 460 videos accessible on the archive site.

The virtual overhaul also opened up access to all 72 fields of indexing data, or metadata, used by one or more of the tobacco companies. Researchers can now directly search the data, and create Boolean queries of unlimited length. Other features include:

  • highlighted query terms in search results
  • simplified page navigation
  • the ability to sort by document date, page count, Bates number and date added to industry site
  • proximity word searching.
Additionally, the "book bag" function, which allows users to save a document's metadata and email or download records, was expanded to include the ability to annotate each entry in the virtual book bag.

The original LTDL was launched in January 2002. The collection has grown from 24 million pages to its current 40.6 million pages. Since its launch, users have accessed more than 19.3 million pages. Searchers are encouraged to use the Questions or Comments? link on each page to send comments and suggestions as to how the site can be improved or modified to satisfy user needs and accessibility. The LTDL has been funded with support from the American Legacy Foundation, the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program, and the National Cancer Institute.
