Message From The President

Dear Colleague,

On Friday, June 22, in Washington, D.C., the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet held a hearing to focus on "Images Kids See on the Screen." It was an important opportunity for the tobacco control community to be heard on this issue. As a witness, I testified about the negative impact pervasive images of smoking have on youth uptake. This issue is timely. On May 24th, the Institute of Medicine (IOM), released a comprehensive report "Ending the Tobacco Problem: A Blueprint for the Nation," that specifies in concrete terms how important it is that our nation solve the number-one cause of preventable death in our country — tobacco use. The report found a crucial need to implement strategies that effectively reduce and prevent smoking, combined with a necessity for changing the regulatory and policy landscapes around tobacco use.

Legacy's First Look Report indicates a variety of cigarette options are available to youth consumers

A recent report by the American Legacy Foundation reveals that among the most popular cigarette brands with teen audiences, have been those that feature menthol and light options as well as candy and exotic flavored cigarettes. The report also documents that cigarette preference is influenced by race and ethnicity.

No Screen Out on the Silver Screen
MPAA Fails to Address Youth Exposure to Smoking in Movies amidst New Research
Recent studies published in the journal, Pediatrics and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine give credence to concerns that on-screen smoking is directly linked to smoking rates among youth. The studies, which focus on domestic and international youth's exposure to smoking in films, come alongside a May 10 announcement from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) which stated that the group would "consider smoking" when rating movies. The American Legacy Foundation believes the action falls short and fails to implement the meaningful recommendations issued by researchers and public health organizations to curb smoking in films.

Moment of truth®: "Singing Cowboy" PSA wins AICP Award
On Wednesday, June 6, Legacy's recent Infect truth® campaign ad "Singing Cowboy," was recognized by Matthew Miller, CEO of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP), for having won the organizations Public Service Award. The AICP is an association representing companies who produce commercials for several different agencies and advertisers in various different media outlets.

World No Tobacco Day — Spotlight on William C. Weldon
American Legacy Foundation® Award Winner Furthers the Goals of World No Tobacco Day.
New studies on the deadly effects and prevalence of smoking governed this year's World No Tobacco Day, May 31, 2007. Events around the world focused on the issue of secondhand smoke, built on recent research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recent American Legacy Foundation Honors awardee William C. Weldon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Johnson & Johnson, has played an instrumental role in promoting the importance of smoke-free workplaces.
