The American Legacy Foundation is committed to funding initiatives that address health disparities in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. Within this month's issue we highlight several exciting grants that use unique methods to address the wide range smoking prevalence among LGBT adults.

The American Legacy Foundation and Women's Policy, Inc. in collaboration with Reps. Lois Capps and Cathy McMorris Rodgers Co-Chairs, of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues and Reps. Public Health Advocates Urge Hollywood to Address Movie Smoking as the Summer Blockbuster Season Kicks Off
Imagery of smoking in movies has a powerful impact on children and teens, research has shown. Each year at least 200,000 children and adolescents try smoking for the first time because of smoking images they see in youth-rated movies. For this reason, the American Legacy Foundation and its partners have advocated for change.

Beth Beru Named Youth Liaison to Legacy Board
Bethlehem "Beth" Beru, a former Legacy intern, has been chosen to serve as Youth Board Liaison to its Board of Directors. Beru, 20, from Silver Spring, MD, is currently a junior at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in broadcasting and public relations.

Faith-Based Institutions Give Smoking Cessation Message to West Virginia Residents
Several members of the American Legacy Foundation® research team recently co-authored a published research study that showed increased incidence of smoking in rural West Virginia communities titled, "A Tobacco Cessation Project for Disadvantaged West Virginia Communities," between the Foundation and Community Voices Inc.
