Hollywood Studio Answers Call to Place truth® Ads in DVDs

The Weinstein Company is the first motion picture studio to add a truth® youth smoking prevention advertisement to one of its DVD releases. Attorneys general from across the nation have repeatedly requested that the Motion Picture Association of America and the major motion picture studios show youth smoking prevention public service messages from the truth® campaign as a means of empowering youth to make wise decisions about tobacco use.

The first effort will involve the DVD edition of the film "Clerks II." Slated for December 5 release, the Clerks DVD will include a classic truth ad called 1200. The 1200 spot calls attention to the fact that about 1200 people die each day in the U.S. from tobacco-related diseases.

Research shows that teens are strongly influenced by actors they idolize smoking on screen. Placing public awareness PSAs before movie screenings and in home entertainment is seen as a positive move to help curb youth smoking by countering the negative effect that smoking in the movies has on American youth.
