American Legacy Foundation and Mayo Clinic Announce Collaboration


Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to announce a collaboration between the American Legacy Foundation® and Mayo Clinic that merges Legacy's public health and marketing acumen with the clinical expertise of the Mayo Clinic's Nicotine Dependence Center to help smokers to successfully kick their smoking habit.

This new collaboration intentionally avoids conventional anti-smoking messaging and instead offers smokers positive advice and resources to help them quit successfully. The most current joint effort focuses on EXsm, an innovative new multi-channel initiative designed to help smokers quit.

R.J. Reynolds to Discontinue U.S. Sale of Flavored Cigarettes
On October 11, 2006, in a historic settlement agreement between the attorneys general of 38 states and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, RJR has agreed to discontinue the sale of candy, fruit and alcohol-flavored cigarettes within the United States. In addition to the ban, the agreement imposes major marketing restrictions on cigarettes manufactured by the tobacco giant, keeping them from using candy, fruit or alcohol-related names such as "Twista Lime", "MochaMint" and "Kauai Kolada". Targeted marketing toward youth by the tobacco industry has been strictly prohibited as a direct violation of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement.

Great Start® — New Campaign Offers Hope to Pregnant Smokers and Their Babies
This month the American Legacy Foundation, together with the Ad Council, launched Great Start®, a public service campaign aimed at helping pregnant smokers quit. The campaign consists of two public service announcements (PSAs) for distribution to radio stations in 25 states and the District of Columbia, as well as four print PSAs to appear in magazines throughout the country. The PSAs will promote the Great Start® quit line (1-866-66-START), a national quit-line to help thousands of pregnant smokers get the resources they need to quit smoking.

Legacy Sponsors Designer Tracy Reese's Spring 2007 Fashion Show
As part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness of Legacy and the impact that smoking has on women, Legacy once again sponsored fashion designer Tracy Reese's Spring 2007 fashion show. The show, which took place October 10 in New York City's Bryant Park, hosted more than 900 members of the fashion, beauty and media industries, including one of Legacy's supporters, Lisa Edelstein from FOX's hit TV series, House.

The Atlantic Monthly and American Legacy Foundation Highlight Photography While Promoting Smoking Cessation
Building on an important long-term partnership, The Atlantic Monthly and the American Legacy Foundation co-hosted a reception earlier this year featuring the work of famed photographer Richard Avedon. The unique event illustrated Legacy's continued efforts to promote smoking cessation, especially among women.

The evening's attendees included designers Cynthia Steffe, Edward Wilkerson, Adrienne Landau and Celerie Kemble as well as fashion executives Constance White (eBay), David Lauren (Polo/Ralph Lauren), Paige Pedersen (Fendi), and make-up industry leader Paula Dorf.
