Code Blue for Lung Cancer Launch |
 |
A new national public service campaign, Code Blue for Lung Cancer, will launch November 1, spreading the life-saving message that quitting smoking, early detection and the search for a cure can help defeat lung cancer, the nation's number one cancer killer. Code Blue, a partnership between the American Legacy Foundation and the National Association of Broadcasters, aims to eliminate the stigma associated with lung cancer. Eighty-five percent of those diagnosed with lung cancer are current or former smokers, whom many assume have the power to quit their addictions and possibly avoid a lung cancer diagnosis. Through a 30-minute documentary produced and directed by Academy Award-winner Geraldine Wurzburg, the stories in Code Blue aim to dispel that assumption and bring widespread understanding to the issues surrounding the nation's number one cancer killer. The public service announcements produced in conjunction with the documentary include former President George H.W. Bush urging smokers to get the help they need. The former president and his wife Barbara have been long-time champions in the fight against cancer since losing their daughter, Robin, to leukemia in 1953. Mr. Bush also co-chairs C-Change, formerly the National Dialogue on Cancer.
