NAQC Assists Mexico in Setting up Quitline

The National American Quitline Consortium (NAQC) recently used its expertise to provide assistance to the Mexican government in establishing a quiltine for tobacco users in the country.

The NAQC sent to the country a 13-member planning and training team to assist with the launch as well as to train counselors on how to handle incoming calls. The team trained 92 counselors in a three-and-a-half-day period and was led by Gary Tedeschi, PhD, clinical director of the California Smokers' Helpline.

NAQC is a nonprofit organization based in Phoenix, Ariz. that strives to promote evidence-based quitline services across diverse communities in North America.

A member of the planning team commented that the work with the Mexican National Quitline will enhance the consortium's knowledge about demographic characteristics of individuals that utilize the quitline service and help measure the effectiveness of various strategies.
