Legacy Recognized by PR News' Platinum PR Awards Program

The American Legacy Foundation® was named a finalist for two awards from the 2007 PR News' Platinum Awards. Legacy's communications effort around ongoing litigation with a tobacco company received a nomination for an award in the Crisis Management category. Legacy's second nomination was in the Annual Report category for the foundation's 2006 Annual Report.

The entry for the Crisis Management Award stemmed from a legal battle between the Lorillard Tobacco Company and Legacy over the foundation's successful truth® youth smoking prevention campaign. Lorillard claimed that Legacy violated the Master Settlement Agreement through its truth® ads, which are based on actual tobacco industry documents. Under the terms of the MSA, Legacy cannot vilify or personally attack tobacco companies or their employees and Legacy maintained it was simply telling the truth based on factual information. At stake was the future of the truth® campaign and the foundation's ability to continue to educate America's teens about the tobacco industry and its deadly products. Legacy was honored for its communications efforts with the media, foundation stakeholders, the public health community and the public around the ongoing lawsuit — a lawsuit in which the Delaware Chancery Court and Delaware Supreme Court unanimously found in the foundation's favor.

The foundation's Annual Report is a compilation of stories communicating the progress and activities of each of the foundation's key programs to stakeholders, corporate partners, the media, and the public health community. The report also serves as a tool to educate grantees, potential partners and other nonprofit organizations about the various outreach efforts undertaken by the foundation, and to help educate the American public about smoking and the toll of tobacco use in our country.

The awards ceremony, held on October 16th in New York, honored many prestigious organizations and Legacy was honored to be recognized for the hard work and tremendous effort the team puts forth every day to educate the public about tobacco and the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry. The award nominations demonstrate that American Legacy Foundation campaigns are truly making a difference.
