Hispanic Heritage Month |
 |
The American Legacy Foundation is proud to join the nation in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th through October 15th.) From its inception, the American Legacy Foundation has been committed to educating and providing tobacco-control resources to underserved populations including the Hispanic community.
Because research shows that Hispanic smokers are more likely than their white counterparts to attempt to quit, but less likely to use cessation medications as part of their quit attempts, earlier this year Legacy embarked on a Spanish-language media relations effort aimed at the Hispanic community. The effort aims to raise awareness in the Hispanic community of the effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapies, and educate about the importance of creating comprehensive quit plans. In its messaging, the effort seeks to dispel the common myth that nicotine found in cigarettes is the most harmful ingredient to a smoker's health and that use of NRTs can be dangerous. The media outreach yielded:
- published articles in 48 Spanish language newspapers
- a Spanish language news segment that aired on radio stations more than 96 times reaching an audience of 2.2 million
- monthly segments on Prevenir es Salud, a Spanish language radio show created by former Legacy board member, Dr. Elmer Huerta, incoming President of the American Cancer Society and founder of the Cancer Preventorium at the Washington Cancer Institute, Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
Efforts like these further our ongoing commitment to increase awareness about smoking and prevent tobacco use within the Spanish-speaking community.
